1: The Prayer Wall [Excerpt]

1: The Prayer Wall [Excerpt]

“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen; all day and all night they will never keep silent. You who remind the LORD, take no rest for yourselves; and give Him no rest until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” (Isaiah 62:6-7)

There are many Christians praying for Israel today, and yet there is a gap in the wall of prayer, concerning Israel at the end of the age. One of the key purposes of this book is to help to bridge this gap. God is seeking intercessors whose hearts resonate with His. He is looking for individuals to understand, and be moved by, the significance of what is coming upon this world. Isaiah tells us, “And He saw that there was no man, and was astonished that there was no one to intercede.”[1]

The Lord is looking for those who never tire of bringing their cause to Him, like the importunate widow.[2] Are we among those whom He is calling to the task of watching and praying? This is a ministry which God highly values. In the time of Ezekiel, the future of the city of Jerusalem hung in the divine balance, “I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.”[3] As a result of there being no intercessor, the Babylonians destroyed the city in 586 BC. God said, “thus I have poured out My indignation on them.”

During Nehemiah’s service as governor of Jerusalem, he led the project to rebuild the walls of the city which had previously been destroyed by the Babylonians. Three days after arriving, Nehemiah secretly surveyed the walls under the cover of night. When he realised how rundown they were, he rallied Judah’s leaders to undertake the rebuilding project. The enemies of Judah laughed when hearing of his plan.[4] Nehemiah realised that any gaps in the wall would enable the enemy to easily infiltrate and wreak havoc upon the restored city and temple.

Now that Israel is approaching her end-times testing, intercessors can likewise be said to form a wall of protection around Israel, standing between the nation and her enemies...
